Russian drone attack on Kyiv kills four people

The attack occurred around 3 a.m. local time on September 28, 2025, when Russian forces launched a series of drones toward the Ukrainian capital. According to Ukrainian emergency services, the strikes hit residential neighborhoods in Kyiv, causing significant damage to buildings and infrastructure.
At least four people were killed in the assault, with more than a dozen others injured, some critically. Rescue teams worked through the morning to search for survivors amid the rubble. 'This was a brutal attack on sleeping civilians,' said Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine's Presidential Office, in a statement released shortly after the incident.
Ukrainian air defense systems were activated immediately, successfully downing 18 out of the 22 drones launched in the wave targeting Kyiv, as reported by the Air Force. The remaining drones caused the fatalities and destruction in the Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts. No military targets were mentioned in the immediate vicinity.

Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, urged residents to remain vigilant and heed air raid warnings. 'We will rebuild, but the aggressor must be held accountable,' he posted on social media. As of midday, cleanup efforts continued, with power outages affecting thousands in the affected zones.
The broader context includes intensified Russian aerial campaigns in recent months, often in response to Ukrainian advances in other regions. Western allies have pledged additional air defense support to Ukraine to counter these threats.
