Aryna Sabalenka's performance coach Jason Stacy has commented on her post-match remarks about quitting tennis after a quarterfinal defeat at the French Open.
Sabalenka lost to Diana Shnaider 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 after leading early in the match. Windy conditions at Court Philippe-Chatrier affected play, and the roof remained open. She committed 57 unforced errors during the contest.
Stacy noted that the team had not spoken with Sabalenka before her comments. He said her frustration was understandable given the circumstances and that she expressed her authentic feelings.
The loss ended Sabalenka's clay-court season without a title and reduced her ranking points from 1300 to 430. She next faces Jessica Pegula in the German Open semifinals.
Sabalenka had previously considered quitting the sport in 2022 amid serve difficulties.
