Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin anime specials announce new cast and staff

The promotional video for the two-part spinoff specials of the Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin anime has revealed a new voice actress and additional staff members. Asami Imai will voice Uketa Hime, the rival to protagonist Kokorowa Hime, in the episodes airing February 15 and 22. The specials continue the story from the original series that premiered in July 2024.

The official website for the Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin anime began streaming a promotional video on Sunday, announcing details for the two-part television special titled Tensui no Sakuna Hime: Kokorowa Inasaku Nisshi, or Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin - Kokorowa's Rice Farming Journal. This spinoff adapts Keiji Andō's novel from October 2021, focusing on Kokorowa, a genius inventor goddess and Sakuna's best friend, who joins her on Hinoe Island for rice farming after a certain incident.

New additions include Asami Imai voicing Uketa Hime, Kokorowa's rival. Keigo Koyanagi penned the scripts, with Ayako Kurome handling color keys and Mayumi Miyaoka overseeing art setting. Returning from the main anime are director Masayuki Yoshihara at P.A. Works, along with Naomi Ōzora as Sakuna and Rika Kinugawa as Kokorowa. Other familiar staff encompass original character designer Ryōta Murayama, character designer Mio Fujishima, chief animation director Sayo Mizuno, art director Tamako Kamiyama, 3D director Motonari Ichikawa, compositing director of photography Tomo Namiki, editor Ayumu Takahashi, sound director Jin Aketagawa, and composer Yoshiaki Fujisawa.

Voice actress Rika Kinugawa confirmed the specials as the sequel project teased in November 2024. They will air on TV Tokyo and five affiliated channels on February 15 and 22. The original anime, based on Edelweiss's 2020 action RPG for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, debuted in July 2024 and streamed on Crunchyroll. The game, localized by XSEED Games, follows harvest goddess Sakuna banishing to a demon-infested island, where she farms and fights using tools and a celestial scarf.

Kokorowa also stars in the forthcoming spinoff game Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation. A new smartphone title, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin: Hinuka Cycle Soul Tales, is slated for release alongside a Japanese-only Steam version.
