Sloane Stephens and Jozy Altidore file for divorce

Tennis star Sloane Stephens and retired soccer player Jozy Altidore, who married in 2022, have ended their relationship. Stephens filed for divorce in Florida, citing an irretrievably broken marriage. The couple's separation is described as amicable by sources close to them.

Sloane Stephens and Jozy Altidore first met in middle school in Florida. They went on to win championships on opposite sides of the Atlantic and married on New Year’s Day 2022 in a ceremony overlooking the Miami Beach waterfront. Four years and one month later, Stephens, 32, filed divorce papers in Florida earlier this month.

In the filings, Stephens described the marriage as “irretrievably broken” and confirmed the existence of a prenuptial agreement. She announced the split publicly on Saturday via her Instagram Stories, stating she was navigating the transition with mutual respect and asking for privacy while thanking her followers for their support. Altidore, 36, has not issued a public statement. Multiple sources close to the couple described the separation as amicable. The couple do not have children together, though Altidore has a son, Cameron, from a previous relationship. The divorce proceedings are expected to be finalised in Florida, with both parties requesting public respect for their privacy.

Stephens won the 2017 United States Open, her only Grand Slam title, and reached the final of the 2018 French Open. She was once ranked third in the world on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tour and represented the United States at the highest level across two decades. A persistent right ankle injury disrupted her 2025 season, leading to a 13-match losing streak and a ranking outside the top 1,000. For her 2026 comeback, she qualified for the Australian Open main draw through three qualifying victories and has worked as a broadcaster for ESPN and TNT. Her next tournament is the WTA 500 event in Merida, Mexico, later this month.

Altidore represented the United States men’s national team 115 times, scoring 42 goals between 2007 and 2019, establishing himself as one of the country’s most prolific international strikers. His club career was primarily in Major League Soccer (MLS), with stints at Hull City and Sunderland in the English Premier League. Since retiring from professional football, he has entered sports investment, including as an investor in an Oklahoma City soccer franchise alongside NBA legend Russell Westbrook and others.
