Seven suspects in police custody have explained why they set fire to a dormitory at Utumishi Girls Academy, killing 16 students.
Preliminary reports indicate that a decision by the school to move examination dates from June 16 to June 2 triggered discontent among some Form Four students.
The learners were also aggrieved by a directive to shoulder costs for a cultural event previously funded by the school. They admitted wanting to join the trend of strikes seen in the past two weeks.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed all schools to install CCTV cameras. Education CS Julius Ogamba has ordered inspections of all boarding schools to be completed within 10 days.
Senator John Methu has called for accountability and urged Murkomen and Ogamba to resign over the handling of the incident.
