Rikard Franzén, a 58-year-old coach from AIK, will assist Switzerland's national ice hockey team at the upcoming home IIHF World Championship in Zürich. The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation announced on Monday that Franzén joins new head coach Jan Cadieux's staff. Franzén recently won the Swiss championship with Fribourg-Gottéron.
Switzerland is preparing a strong squad for its home IIHF World Championship, with added reinforcement from Swedish coach Rikard Franzén. The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation announced on Monday that the 58-year-old Stockholm native will serve as an assistant coach under new head coach Jan Cadieux for the tournament in Zürich. Franzén and Cadieux previously worked together at Genève-Servette, and Franzén has also coached with SCL Tigers and Lausanne HC in Switzerland's top league. He was part of Switzerland's Olympic staff in Milano in February and assisted at last year's World Championship. Franzén's most recent triumph came just days ago, when he helped Fribourg-Gottéron secure the Swiss championship alongside Roger Rönnberg. His last role in Sweden was as head coach of AIK in the SHL during the 2013/2014 season. This appointment bolsters Switzerland's coaching bench ahead of the home event.
