Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan disclosed that Kevin Costner's character John Dutton was meant to leave the series after three seasons. The plan changed due to network concerns over the show's success. Sheridan shared the details during a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast.
Sheridan explained that Costner's contract limited him to the first three seasons. The original storyline called for Costner's youngest son to take over the ranch after his exit.
Costner was prepared to depart at the end of season 3, Sheridan said. The network persuaded him to stay for two additional seasons because the series remained a major hit.
Tensions arose during contract talks for season 5. Costner sought a reduced schedule, higher pay, and script approval, but these requests were rejected. On-set clashes with co-star Wes Bentley were also reported, though representatives said the issues were resolved.
Costner later directed and starred in his Western film Horizon: An American Saga.
