Canadian singer-songwriter Tobias Jesso Jr. has revealed details of his long-awaited second studio album, Shine, set for release on November 21 via R&R. The announcement coincides with the debut of a music video for lead single 'I Love You,' featuring actors Dakota Johnson and Riley Keough. Following a decade focused on songwriting for major artists, Jesso returns to his solo work with personal themes at its core.
Tobias Jesso Jr. first gained attention with his 2015 debut album Goon, praised for its timeless piano-driven songs reminiscent of classic singer-songwriters. Now 40, Jesso stepped away from solo releases to collaborate as a writer and producer with artists including Adele, Harry Styles, Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Florence + the Machine, Haim, FKA twigs, Orville Peck, Bon Iver, Justin Bieber, Dijon, and Rosalía. His contributions earned him the inaugural Grammy for Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical, in 2023, and a nomination for the 2026 awards.
Album Details
Shine, stylized as s h i n e, is an eight-track effort self-produced by Jesso and mixed by Shawn Everett. According to a press release, the songs explore Jesso's life, including his mom, son, a breakup, and current experiences, with contributions from Danielle Haim, Eli Teplin, Julian Bunetta, Justin Vernon, Rosie Hamilton, Tommy King, and even a psychic. Written during a six-week sabbatical earlier this year and recorded live on piano at his home, the album marks a culmination of his past decade's work.
