The crash took place shortly after midnight on October 28, 2025, along the eastbound lanes of the I-10 Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas. According to the Houston Police Department, the driver of a BMW sedan mistakenly entered the freeway in the wrong direction by driving down an exit ramp and proceeding westbound. Ignoring multiple "Do Not Enter" and "Wrong Way" signs, the BMW slammed into an oncoming Tesla Cybertruck, causing the sedan to burst into flames almost instantly. The impact's force propelled the Cybertruck into a nearby 18-wheeler truck.
The BMW driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Cybertruck's 38-year-old driver—a father of two young children—was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to injuries. The BMW driver's name has not been released pending further investigation.
Houston Police Sgt. Rebecca Dallas told KHOU, "The BMW driver had entered the freeway in the opposite direction, ignoring multiple Do Not Enter and Wrong Way signs along the ramp."
Investigators plan to perform an autopsy on the BMW driver to determine if impairment, such as alcohol influence, contributed to the crash. The specific model of the BMW remains unidentified.
Such wrong-way incidents are alarmingly common in the area. Over the past decade, Harris County has recorded more than 1,100 fatalities from wrong-way driving.
