UEFA appoints Kenyan referee Stephen Yiembe for PSG vs Aston Villa Super Cup

UEFA has appointed Kenyan FIFA Assistant Referee Stephen Yiembe to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa. The match is scheduled for August 12 at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, Germany. Yiembe will serve as an assistant referee alongside Somali referee Omar Artan and Djibouti's Liban Abdoulrazack Ahmed.

The appointment marks the first time a Kenyan referee has been selected for a European football competition. It falls under a new Memorandum of Understanding between UEFA and the Confederation of African Football aimed at referee development.

Yiembe, born in Nakuru, has officiated at several major tournaments. These include the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Paris 2024 Olympics, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The East African trio will handle duties for the Super Cup, which features the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
