Will Howard shows smoother play in Steelers spring practices

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard has demonstrated noticeable improvement during spring practices, according to veteran beat writer Gerry Dulac. The second-year player, selected in the sixth round out of Ohio State last year, appears more confident and fluid in his movements.

Dulac highlighted Howard's progress on 102.5 WDVE. “What you notice of Will Howard is how much smoother from Year 1 to Year 2 he is running what he’s running”, he said. “Whether that’s his footwork, whether it’s rolling out, his throws, whatever. Will Howard looks very good—he does.”

The assessment comes amid focus on rookie Drew Allar, taken in the third round in April. Howard spent much of his first season on injured reserve after hurting his hand before the preseason. He returned late to practice, and new head coach Mike McCarthy reviewed the tape.

The working plan positions Howard as the likely backup to Aaron Rodgers this season, with Allar redshirting. Mason Rudolph's role remains uncertain. Dulac noted Howard looks calm and sure of himself, though more evaluation awaits the preseason.
