Xabi Alonso spoke publicly for the first time as Chelsea head coach on Monday at Stamford Bridge. He confirmed he wants Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez to remain at the club after the player was linked with a move to Real Madrid.
Alonso said he and Fernandez had spoken privately. He also confirmed striker Nicolas Jackson will join the squad's pre-season tour in Asia after Bayern Munich decided against making his loan permanent.
Winger Alejandro Garnacho has reached an agreement to remain away from the first-team squad while seeking a new club, with Roma among the interested sides. Chelsea completed the sale of midfielder Andrey Santos to Manchester United shortly before the press conference.
Alonso described taking charge of Chelsea as a privilege and honour. He said returning to European competition next season remains a priority for the club.
