Youth disrupt affordable housing board meeting in Makongeni

Youth in Nairobi's Makongeni neighborhood disrupted a meeting on November 5, 2025, organized by the Retired Railway Workers Pension Fund in collaboration with the Affordable Housing Board. The meeting aimed to educate residents on the Resettlement Action Plan under the Affordable Housing agenda. The event turned violent, forcing police to intervene after protesters attempted to block Jogoo Road.

The meeting, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., aimed to educate residents and gather feedback on the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), a key component of the Makongeni Affordable Housing Project. This initiative seeks to transform old railway corporation houses into modern high-rise buildings, along with improved infrastructure, schools, and health centers.

However, the gathering descended into chaos as a group of rowdy youth attempted to block Jogoo Road, causing a brief traffic jam. Makadara Deputy County Commissioner Philip Koima stated: “This meeting was intended to provide education, receive opinions and complaints from the community regarding the resettlement plan, and ensure everyone understands the steps being taken.”

Koima added that he received information implicating a member of the Makongeni Residents Association (MARA) in plotting the disruption. “Some MARA leaders opposed to this plan have personal interests. They have been illegally renting government houses to other tenants at high prices,” he said. An investigation is ongoing, with strict measures to be taken against those responsible.

Attending residents expressed regret, claiming they felt threatened by the shouting youth and were unable to participate. The Makongeni Redevelopment Project is part of the government's broader Affordable Housing program to provide decent homes for low-income earners. Residents will receive temporary housing during construction and return to new units upon completion. Implementation occurs in phases, and authorities have urged residents to cooperate.
