Zapatero defense seeks more US data on seized phone

The lawyer for José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has filed a document with the judge in the Plus Ultra case requesting detailed information on how the US obtained the contents of the mobile phone belonging to businessman Rodolfo Reyes Rojas.

Lawyer Víctor Moreno Catena responded on Wednesday to an order by magistrate José Luis Calama, who requested US authorization to use WhatsApp conversations extracted from the device as evidence in a trial. The document asks for details on the judicial or administrative resolution that authorized the 2021 seizure, the scope of the extraction and the chain of custody until delivery to Spanish police in March 2026. Moreno Catena warns that the limited information available raises doubts about respect for the right of defense and the authenticity of the communications. Among the eight requests are details on the software used, mechanisms for verifying integrity and communications between the UDEF and Homeland Security Investigations. Zapatero will appear as investigated before the Audiencia Nacional in one week on charges of influence peddling and money laundering. The judge described the former president as the apex of the investigated network.
