AEW star MVP recently discussed his 2008 Royal Rumble bout against WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair during an episode of the podcast Marking Out. The match carried high stakes as Flair's career was reportedly on the line at the time.
MVP, then the WWE United States Champion, faced Flair in what was the latter's final match at Madison Square Garden and the former's first there. He noted the significance of competing against the wrestling legend in that setting.
"You can have your opinions of Ric Flair," MVP said. "But when we talk about professional wrestling in the United States, Ric Flair is one of the most important players in the history of professional wrestling."
MVP came close to victory with a three count that was reversed after the referee spotted Flair's foot on the ropes. Flair ultimately won the match by submitting MVP with the Figure Four Leg Lock.
Flair continued wrestling for several more months before losing to Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 24.
