Amiga filesystem now available on Linux and Mac through emulated driver

A new project called amifuse brings the Amiga's original filesystem to Linux and Mac platforms. It achieves this by emulating an authentic AmigaOS driver using Motorola 68k CPU emulation. The development was announced on December 22, 2025.

The amifuse project introduces support for the Amiga filesystem on modern operating systems like Linux and Mac. This innovation relies on an original AmigaOS driver, which is run within an emulation of the Motorola 68k CPU. By doing so, users can now access and manage Amiga-formatted storage devices directly from their Linux or Mac systems without needing additional hardware or complex workarounds.

This emulated approach preserves the integrity of the original AmigaOS functionality, allowing seamless interaction with legacy file structures. The project marks a significant step in bridging retro computing with contemporary platforms, potentially benefiting enthusiasts and archivists who work with vintage Amiga media.

Published on December 22, 2025, the amifuse initiative highlights ongoing efforts to maintain compatibility with historical software ecosystems amid evolving technology.
