Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger praised current Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey's transition to safety, suggesting he has the potential to earn All-Pro honors at the position. Roethlisberger highlighted Ramsey's speed, instincts, and experience during a recent podcast appearance. Ramsey, a three-time All-Pro at cornerback, has stabilized the Steelers' secondary in his new role.
The Pittsburgh Steelers' secondary struggled early in the 2025 season but has shown improvement recently, largely due to Jalen Ramsey's shift to safety. Previously splitting time between cornerback and safety, Ramsey now primarily plays safety and has not looked out of place. Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers' longtime quarterback, expressed strong belief in Ramsey's capabilities during Tuesday's episode of his Footbahlin’ podcast.
“You know what [Jalen] Ramsey’s gonna give you back there,” Roethlisberger said. “He is a fast, instinct guy, been in the league, All-Pro. I think there’s a chance he’s gonna develop into an All-Pro safety. I think that’s how good he is and the potential that he has.”
Ramsey has earned All-Pro honors three times in his NFL career, with his most recent selection in 2021 as a cornerback. Transitioning positions and achieving All-Pro status again would be challenging, but Roethlisberger pointed to precedents like Rod Woodson, Charles Woodson, and Ronnie Lott, all Pro Football Hall of Famers who excelled at both cornerback and safety.
Ramsey is no stranger to the safety position, having played it effectively at a high level in college. Although he has limited NFL experience there, his impact has been immediate, helping to steady the Steelers' defense. With seven games remaining in the season, Ramsey could make a strong case for recognition this year. At 31 years old, the move might even extend his career, as similar transitions have for other players. A full offseason dedicated to safety could unlock further potential.
