The Islanders were returning from a successful seven-game road trip where they went 6-1-0, but fell in the opener of their seven-game homestand.
Schenn opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the game, beating Ilya Sorokin blocker side on a rush with an assist from Pavel Buchnevich. Sorokin, who finished with 20 saves on 22 shots, made a key stop on Dalibor Dvorsky's backdoor attempt late in the first period.
Suter extended the lead to 2-0 with 2:09 left in the second period, converting a rebound from Dylan Holloway's point shot to the backhand over Sorokin's pad.
The Islanders mounted a late push in the third. Lee cut the deficit to 1-2 at 16:40 during a six-on-five with Sorokin pulled, tipping in a rebound from the crease. New York thought they had tied it at 17:54 on a deflection by Jonathan Drouin, but the goal was waved off due to goalie interference by Kyle Palmieri. Faulk was assessed a double minor for high-sticking Drouin, giving the Islanders a six-on-four advantage with the extra attacker, but Binnington denied Bo Horvat's one-timer with 29 seconds left.
Blues defenseman Justin Faulk left the game late in the third period. Islanders coach Patrick Roy noted the early deficit hurt, saying, "The first goal probably hurt us a bit, and we just couldn't get that one back till the end." Forward Anders Lee added, "Binnington was pretty solid tonight. I liked our game. We just didn't get the extra one to get us into OT."
The Islanders host the Seattle Kraken on Sunday, while the Blues visit the New York Rangers on Monday.
