CachyOS benchmarked on AMD EPYC ahead of 2026 Server Edition

Following the announcement of its 2026 Server Edition, CachyOS has undergone initial benchmarks on AMD EPYC server hardware. Tests compare the current distribution to Arch Linux and Ubuntu in raw performance and power efficiency, filling the void left by Intel's discontinued Clear Linux.

Recent benchmarks, conducted over the Christmas holiday on a Supermicro server with a 96-core AMD EPYC 9655P (Zen 5) processor, Supermicro H13SSL-N motherboard, 12 modules of 64GB DDR5-6000 memory, and a 3.2TB Micron 7450 NVMe SSD, offer an early look at CachyOS's server potential.

Fresh installations of CachyOS, upstream Arch Linux, Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS (standard server), and Ubuntu 25.10 (previewing 26.04 LTS improvements) were evaluated using default kernel settings, CPU frequency scaling, and governors. Dozens of workloads measured speed and the EPYC 9655P's power draw, highlighting performance-per-watt for data centers.

With the Server Edition in early development—promising security and efficiency enhancements amid Intel's Clear Linux discontinuation—these results position CachyOS as a contender for enterprise use. Future coverage will assess the official 2026 release on AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon platforms.
