Google Maps adds Gemini AI navigation for walking and cycling

Google has expanded its Gemini AI navigation feature in Maps to include walking and cycling routes, allowing users to ask conversational questions hands-free. Previously limited to driving, the update aims to make navigation more intuitive for pedestrians and cyclists. The feature is now live worldwide on iOS devices where Gemini is available.

Google's latest update to Maps integrates Gemini AI for walking and cycling navigation, transforming the app into a more interactive companion for on-the-go users. Described by Google as "like talking to a friend in the passenger seat," the feature enables real-time, context-aware responses without needing to interact with the phone screen.

For cyclists, the hands-free assistance prioritizes safety and efficiency. Users can query their estimated time of arrival with "What's my ETA?" or check schedules by asking "When's my next meeting?" If delayed, Gemini can handle quick tasks, such as sending a message: "Text Sarah I'm 10 minutes behind."

Walkers benefit from personalized guidance, turning navigation into an exploratory tool. Questions like "What neighborhood am I in?" or "What are the top-rated restaurants nearby?" draw from Maps' local data to provide route-specific recommendations.

CNET reviewer tested the feature during an afternoon dog walk in St. Petersburg, Florida, with their Labrador, Holden. Navigating back home, they asked, "Is it illegal to walk a dog without a leash in Florida?" Gemini explained that Florida lacks a statewide leash law, deferring to local counties and municipalities. A follow-up query, "Is it illegal to walk an off-leash dog in St. Petersburg?" confirmed it is prohibited, while suggesting alternatives like the off-leash dog beach at Fort De Soto Park.

The rollout enhances usability for commuters, travelers, and daily walkers, though it may draw attention from onlookers due to voice interactions. While not revolutionary, the conversational and succinct responses proved practical in real-world scenarios, particularly for those with occupied hands.
