Cleveland Guardians outfielder George Valera is dealing with a mild left calf strain that will keep him out of the starting lineup for several days, according to manager Stephen Vogt. The 25-year-old last played on Monday in a win over the Royals. The team is monitoring his condition with Opening Day approaching.
In Peoria, Arizona, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt announced on Saturday that George Valera has suffered a mild left calf strain. This injury occurred after Valera's most recent appearance on Monday, when the Guardians defeated the Royals 6-2 at Surprise Stadium. In that game, Valera went 1-for-3 with a single.
Vogt described the strain as mild and stated that the club is keeping a close eye on it. "He will not play for a few more days," Vogt said. "It’s there. He’s still able to do some baseball activity, but he cannot play."
Valera, who made his MLB debut on September 1 of the previous season, recorded two home runs and a .748 OPS across 16 games. He started nine of his 12 games as the No. 2 hitter in the lineup and also batted there twice during the AL Wild Card Series, including a solo home run in Game 2 that helped secure a 6-1 victory over the Tigers.
This spring, Valera has performed well, batting .292 with seven hits in 24 at-bats over 10 games, including two doubles, one home run, and four RBIs. As a left-handed corner outfielder, he is vying for a spot on the Opening Day roster, now just 12 days away. After dealing with injuries in the past two springs—including a ruptured right patellar tendon in September 2024 that led to rehab in 2025—Valera has had a full camp this year. Vogt praised his movement earlier in the week: "I just love watching him move in the outfield right now. He's moving free. He's not moving like somebody rehabbing like you've seen in the last few years. It's been really refreshing watching George kind of be free to go play and do his thing."
In other injury news, infielder Daniel Schneemann is recovering from a mild right ankle sprain sustained during a pregame drill on Friday against the Angels. X-rays were negative, and he expects to return soon. "They called it a mild sprain," Schneemann said. "Just a couple of days, hopefully, it will get better, and I’ll be in there hopefully some time next week."
Schneemann has shown versatility this spring, playing second base, third base, shortstop, and left field while batting .320 in 10 games. Vogt highlighted his value: "It's a piece that most teams would love to have, and we're really fortunate that we have Schnee. We can trust him anywhere on the field. That's a huge, huge value."
Additionally, Steven Kwan missed Saturday's lineup against the Padres due to an upper respiratory issue and is listed as day to day. The Guardians also reassigned left-handed pitchers Steven Pérez and Will Dion to Minor League camp, leaving the spring roster at 48 players.
