The UK's first floating padel tennis courts in Liverpool have faced delays but are now scheduled to open in May. Originally planned for autumn 2025, the facility at Princes Dock will feature three courts and a clubhouse. The project aims to position Liverpool as a key destination for the rapidly growing sport.
The team behind the UK's first floating padel destination in Liverpool has provided an update following delays. Planning for the venue at Liverpool Waters was approved by Liverpool City Council in July 2025, with an initial opening targeted for mid-autumn 2025. However, the project did not meet that timeline, and the new opening date is set for May.
Located in Princes Dock, the development includes three padel courts built on state-of-the-art floating platforms, marking a milestone for the sport in the country. It will also introduce the world's first floating clubhouse, designed for socialising, fitness, and waterfront relaxation, with capacity for up to 100 guests. The clubhouse features a bar, kitchen, decked seating area overlooking the water, and a design inspired by clean Nordic aesthetics, complementing other floating leisure options like Wyld Sauna at Liverpool Waters.
Peel Waters, responsible for the Liverpool Waters regeneration, has partnered with international experts in floating infrastructure and padel. The courts will use a special floating platform from Finland and courts manufactured in Spain. A retail hub within the clubhouse will sell padel essentials and host a flagship store for a UK-based lifestyle and leisurewear brand, to be announced before opening.
Padel, described as the world's fastest-growing sport, has over 700 courts in the UK, though none floating until this project. Peel Waters managing director James Whittaker stated: “Liverpool Waters is leading the way in bringing innovative, world-class experiences to the UK. This new floating Padel facility will become a flagship destination for the sport and for waterside leisure in Britain.”
He added: “As a padel enthusiast, I know first-hand how fun, accessible, and social this sport is. This new floating padel facility will be a must-visit destination for players around the world.”
Padel Ventures and FLP Ltd CEO Gareth Evans commented: “We’re thrilled to announce that planning permission has been officially approved for our brand-new padel facility at Liverpool Waters — and the timing couldn’t be better. With padel rapidly gaining popularity across the UK, this is set to become a standout destination for sport, socialising, and style in the heart of Liverpool.”
The facility is expected to create a unique dockside destination, aligning Liverpool with global spots like Dubai, Miami, and Helsinki.
