Lord of the Rings board game fully funds on Kickstarter in under 10 minutes

A new board game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, developed by Brazilian publisher D20 Culture in partnership with Warner Bros., has been fully funded on Kickstarter in less than 10 minutes. Titled Foes of Middle-earth, the game allows players to embody heroes like Frodo and Aragorn in a strategic dungeon crawler. The Kickstarter campaign runs until March 11, 2026, as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring.

The Foes of Middle-earth board game, licensed from New Line Cinema’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, marks the beginning of a broader collaboration between D20 Culture and Warner Bros. to bring iconic franchises to tabletop gaming. Launched on Kickstarter around February 27, 2026, the campaign achieved full funding in under 10 minutes, reflecting strong fan interest.

In the game, players assume roles of legendary heroes including Frodo, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, embarking on a cooperative dungeon crawler divided into three phases: exploration, mini-boss challenges, and a final boss battle against a Balrog. The core set includes 22 miniatures, such as an 8.3-inch painted Balrog figurine and miniatures of the four heroes, along with enemies like a Nazgûl Black Rider, sets of four Orcs, Wargs, Uruks, and Goblins. It features a handcrafted dual-layered buildable board with 25 tiles illustrating Middle-earth regions, double-layered dashboards for heroes and the Balrog, and over 200 cards covering menaces, events, skills, quests, and items.

Expansions enhance the experience: the Saruman Expansion offers a 12.5-inch replica of Orthanc tower in Isengard, a miniature of Saruman, and heroes Merry and Pippin; the Treebeard Character Set includes a 6-inch Ent figure with magnetic shoulders for Merry and Pippin to ride. Six pledge tiers remain available until the campaign closes on March 11, 2026.

Gameplay involves exploring iconic locations from Arda through randomly placed tiles that reveal regions only when explored by heroes, ensuring unique sessions. Adventures culminate in key moments from the Fellowship's journey, such as conflicts with the Watcher in the Water and battles in the Hall of Moria, leading to the confrontation with the Balrog of Moria.
