North Texas women's basketball loses first game 60-51 to Abilene Christian

The University of North Texas women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 60-51 to Abilene Christian on Wednesday at The Super Pit. The defeat snapped a 14-game home winning streak, leaving the Mean Green at 3-1 overall. Despite defensive efforts, offensive struggles proved costly in the tight contest.

DENTON, Texas – The UNT women's basketball team entered Wednesday's matchup with Abilene Christian riding high on a 14-game winning streak at The Super Pit, dating back to Dec. 21 of last season. However, the Wildcats handed the Mean Green their first defeat of the 2025-26 campaign, winning 60-51 and improving to 4-1.

UNT struggled offensively, shooting just 34% from the field and making only 1 of 20 three-point attempts. This was a stark contrast to their previous performance, where they converted 48.2% from beyond the arc through the first three games. Defensively, North Texas held Abilene Christian to 37% shooting and forced 25 turnovers, keeping the game close.

The Mean Green led for most of the third quarter but couldn't maintain the advantage. ACU tied the score at 42 with eight minutes remaining in the fourth. Both teams endured scoring droughts exceeding five minutes, but the Wildcats broke through first, outscoring UNT 18-7 in the final frame, aided by free throws.

With point guard Jazzy Owens-Barnett sidelined, forward Mekhia Chase stepped up in her first start, recording 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for her first Division I double-double. It marked the first time since 2021 a UNT guard grabbed double-digit rebounds. Aysia Proctor led the scoring with 13 points off the bench.

Abilene Christian had four players in double figures, topped by Payton Hull's 16 points. UNT's national fifth-ranked scoring offense was held in check, highlighting areas for improvement.

The Mean Green will hit the road for the first time this season, facing SMU on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT in Moody Coliseum.
