Royal Challengers Bengaluru has sparked excitement among fans with a cryptic social media post suggesting their home matches for IPL 2026 will be at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The post comes after the Karnataka government granted permission for IPL games at the venue earlier this year. This follows a period of uncertainty due to safety concerns stemming from a tragic incident after RCB's 2025 title win.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the defending IPL champions after their maiden title win in 2025, shared a post on X on March 2, 2026, featuring images of the IPL and WPL trophies against the backdrop of M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The caption read, “Home is where our heart is,” fueling speculation that the franchise will host its IPL 2026 home games at the iconic Bengaluru venue.
The stadium has been sidelined for competitive cricket since June 4, 2025, when a stampede near MG Road and Cubbon Road during celebrations for RCB's IPL victory claimed 11 lives. Nearly 2.5 lakh fans had gathered for a victory parade from Vidhana Soudha and a fan engagement event at the stadium, leading authorities to deem the venue unsafe for large crowds. As a result, even fixtures like the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup were shifted elsewhere.
On February 12, 2026, the Karnataka government approved the return of IPL matches to Chinnaswamy Stadium, prioritizing public safety. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated on X, “In the interest of the sport and its fans, the Cabinet today has taken an important decision to permit the conduct of IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium, while keeping public safety paramount.” The approval incorporates recommendations from the Justice John Michael D’Cunha Report, including strict ticketing norms, crowd regulation, and stadium access protocols. Reports indicate a capped capacity of 35,000 spectators and the use of AI-enabled surveillance.
With IPL 2026 set to begin on March 28, RCB, as defending champions, is expected to feature in the opening match. The franchise has not issued an official confirmation, but the post has been interpreted by fans as a strong indication of cricket's return to Bengaluru. This development marks a significant step for the team and its supporters, known as the '12th Man Army,' after months of venue uncertainty.
