Rivian launches Apple Watch app for EV controls

Rivian has introduced an Apple Watch application that allows owners of its Gen 2 electric vehicles to control various functions directly from their wrist. The app supports unlocking doors by simply approaching the vehicle and includes options for climate and charging adjustments. This update builds on Rivian's recent expansion of digital key compatibility across multiple devices.

Rivian, an electric vehicle manufacturer, has rolled out a dedicated app for the Apple Watch, enabling users to manage key aspects of their Gen 2 R1S and R1T models without needing their smartphone. Owners can now leave their phone behind—perhaps in a glove box—and use the watch to lock and unlock doors, activate the alarm, or vent the windows with a simple tap.

A standout feature is the passive car key functionality. Once the digital key is configured, the vehicle unlocks automatically as the owner walks up to it. The app also permits setting the cabin temperature and selecting a target state of charge by rotating the watch's digital crown. Users have the flexibility to customize up to four quick controls on the app's main interface and can even add a battery status indicator to their Apple Watch face for at-a-glance monitoring.

Rivian has indicated plans to enhance the app with additional features over time. This development follows the company's activation of digital car key support for Apple devices, as well as Google Pixel and Samsung phones, which began in December. Apple's support for digital car keys on iPhones and Apple Watches dates back to 2020, and numerous automakers have since integrated the technology into their vehicles.

The app's release underscores Rivian's focus on seamless integration with wearable devices, simplifying daily interactions for EV drivers.
