Tesla confirms Robotaxi expansion to five new US cities

Tesla has announced plans to extend its Robotaxi ride-hailing service to five additional cities in the United States. The expansion follows initial launches in Austin and the Bay Area. The company detailed the move during its 2025 Annual Shareholder Meeting.

Tesla's Robotaxi service, a ride-hailing offering powered by Full Self-Driving technology, began operations in Austin, Texas, in late June 2025, allowing driverless operation as long as vehicles avoid freeways. A few weeks later, the service launched in California's Bay Area, where a Safety Monitor occupies the driver's seat while the system controls the vehicle. These variations reflect differing local regulations, which continue to shape Tesla's approach to expansion.

During the company's Annual Shareholder Meeting on Thursday, November 7, 2025, Tesla specified the next five cities for Robotaxi rollout: Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, and Miami. CEO Elon Musk had previously indicated ambitions for Nevada, Arizona, and Florida, aligning with these locations. The expansion aims to broaden the service area to more major US cities in the coming months.

Tesla plans to reach half of the US population with the service by year's end, though the company anticipates adding only a handful of cities this year, marking significant progress amid regulatory hurdles. At the meeting, Musk highlighted advancements in autonomy, stating that Tesla would likely enable vehicle owners to text while the vehicle drives, potentially within a month or two, reducing driver responsibility.

This push underscores Tesla's focus on scaling autonomous ride-hailing domestically, with operations adapting to jurisdictional rules to ensure safe deployment.
