Tesla sells out Lunar Silver for 2026 Model S and X

The 2026 Tesla Model S and Model X can no longer be customized in Lunar Silver, a $2,500 paint option added in early 2024. Buyers must select from other colors or seek inventory vehicles. This development comes as the models enter their final production year.

Tesla has discontinued the Lunar Silver color option for new orders of the 2026 Model S and Model X electric vehicles, according to the company's online configurators. Previously available for an additional $2,500, this metallic silver shade, introduced in early 2024, is now listed as sold out. Prior to its addition, the Model S offered Silver Metallic only until 2018.

Shoppers configuring these flagship EVs face limited choices, with alternatives including Stealth Grey at no extra cost, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, and Solid Black, each carrying a $1,500 upcharge. Premium options like Frost Blue Metallic and Ultra Red command $2,500, matching Lunar Silver's former price. For comparison, the 2026 Model Y remains available in Quicksilver, which features a liquid metal effect.

Despite the configurator restriction, Tesla maintains inventory of Lunar Silver-finished Model S and Model X units. In Southern California, at least a dozen non-demonstrator examples are available, with no reported discounts applied. Delivery lead times for new orders stand at up to five weeks.

The Model S, launched in 2012, and the Model X, introduced in 2016, are approaching the end of production, scheduled to conclude at the close of the second quarter. Analysts suggest a return of Lunar Silver is improbable before then, given the models' impending phase-out.

Tesla is developing a new compact electric SUV priced below the $36,990 Model 3 and measuring 168 inches (4.3 meters) long—shorter than the Model 3 (185.8 inches) and Model Y (188.7 inches)—according to Reuters citing four anonymous supplier sources. The all-new design awaits CEO Elon Musk's production approval and may launch first in China before expanding to U.S. and German factories, signaling a pivot back to core vehicles after a focus on robotaxis and humanoid robots.

Following its February announcement, Tesla has fully halted production of Model S and Model X at the Fremont factory, leaving only a few hundred vehicles in global inventory—mostly high-performance Plaid models. CEO Elon Musk urged buyers to order quickly as stock dwindles, freeing factory space for Optimus humanoid robot production.
