YouTube adds background play and downloads to premium lite plan

YouTube is enhancing its Premium Lite subscription by adding background play and offline downloads, features previously exclusive to the full Premium tier. The $8-per-month plan, launched in the US in March 2025, already provides ad-free viewing for most videos. These updates, based on user feedback, begin rolling out worldwide this week.

YouTube announced on Tuesday that it is introducing background play and downloads to its Premium Lite plan, making these capabilities available to subscribers without needing to upgrade to the more expensive Premium tier.

The Premium Lite subscription, priced at $8 a month, was launched in the US in March 2025. It offers ad-free streaming for most videos, including content on YouTube Kids, gaming, beauty, podcasts, and other non-music categories. However, ads remain on music videos, YouTube Shorts, and some other content. In contrast, the full YouTube Premium subscription, at $14 per month, provides ad-free access to all videos, including music, along with YouTube Music Premium at no extra cost.

The new features allow Premium Lite users to play videos in the background—such as while using other apps or with the screen locked—and download most videos for offline viewing. These additions respond to user requests, as stated by YouTube in its blog post. The rollout starts today and will continue over the coming weeks for Lite subscribers around the world.

This update follows Google's recent efforts to restrict workarounds that enabled non-Premium users to access background play, such as through mobile web browsers or ad blockers. "Background playback is a feature intended to be exclusive for YouTube Premium members. While some non-Premium users may have previously been able to access this through mobile web browsers in certain scenarios, we have updated the experience to ensure consistency across all our platforms," Google told Android Authority.

By extending these popular features to the Lite tier, YouTube aims to attract more users to its paid services while maintaining distinctions between subscription levels.
