A4 near Erfurt towards Frankfurt reopened after accident

The A4 highway near Erfurt towards Frankfurt was closed for about two hours following a multi-vehicle accident. A truck veered into a ditch, but the road has now been reopened. Two people were injured.

On Monday evening, a serious accident occurred on the A4 between the Erfurt-Ost and Erfurt-West junctions. A 24-year-old driver attempted to change from the left to the middle lane but collided with another vehicle. The car that had been in the middle lane crashed into the central barrier, while the other struck a truck.

The truck driver swerved to avoid the collision and veered off the road to the right, coming to a stop in a ditch with his articulated lorry. The truck was loaded with harmless granulate, which had to be vacuumed out before recovery. Initially, only the right lane was closed, but later the entire carriageway for about two hours, according to the highway police. The closure was lifted early in the evening.

The 21-year-old driver of the middle-lane car and the 60-year-old truck driver sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals. Property damage is estimated at 85,000 euros. Police are investigating the exact sequence of events.
