German progressive death metal band Alkaloid has unveiled a live rendition of their track The Fungi From Yuggoth, serving as the final single from their upcoming live album. The album, titled Bach Out of Bounds – Live in the Netherlands, is set for release on January 23, 2026, via Season of Mist. This version incorporates classical influences from Johann Sebastian Bach while preserving the song's intense death metal core.
Alkaloid, a German progressive death metal outfit, has shared a new live version of The Fungi From Yuggoth as the concluding advance single from their forthcoming album Bach Out of Bounds – Live in the Netherlands. Scheduled for release on January 23, 2026, through Season of Mist, the album captures performances from three special concerts in the Netherlands during 2024. These shows occurred at the Bachfestival in Dordrecht, Paard van Troject in The Hague, and November Music in Den Bosch.
The original track appeared on Alkaloid's latest studio album, Numen. For this live arrangement, the band expanded the composition by drawing on techniques from Johann Sebastian Bach, without attempting to mimic his style directly. Guitarist and composer Morean explained, "Alkaloid did not try to write a Bach style piece. Instead, they used Bach’s techniques to push their own songwriting in a new direction."
Enhancements include five-string violin, cello, and extended improvisational sections, which reshape the song while maintaining its aggressive foundation. The performance emphasizes the interplay between violinist Oene van Geel and drummer Hannes Grossmann, building tension toward an explosive climax. This approach allows the track to evolve without diminishing its original power.
For these concerts, Alkaloid augmented their lineup to explore greater dynamic contrasts and prolonged passages, blending classical structure with progressive death metal. The album will be available as a CD digipack and a double vinyl gatefold, offering a snapshot of the band's experimental fusion.
The tracklist features: Allegro (BMV 1052-I), Adagio (BMV 1052-I), Beneath the Sea, Cthulhu, Haunter of the Void, A Fool’s Desire, Agnus Dei (BMV 232), and The Fungi From Yuggoth.
