The Birmingham side clearly outclassed German side Freiburg. Goals were scored by Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers. With the victory Aston Villa returns to the top of European football after three decades.
Emiliano Martínez revealed he broke a finger before the match yet chose to play through the injury. The goalkeeper showed concern during the pre-match warm-up. The club has not issued an official medical update so far.
Martínez marked the title with tears and hugs to supporters. Buendía, who shone with a goal and an assist, said reaching the night had been very hard and called it indescribable. Manager Unai Emery secured his fifth Europa League.
