The movie Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender premiered at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday and began streaming on Paramount+ on Saturday. It continues the story of Aang and his friends as adults after the original animated series.
The film features Eric Nam as Aang, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Dionne Quan as Toph and Steven Yeun as Zuko. They encounter a new character named Tagah, played by Dave Bautista.
Original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko formed Avatar Studios in 2021 after leaving a Netflix remake project. The movie was delayed from a planned 2025 theatrical release and now has a limited theater run to qualify for awards.
A second series titled Avatar: Seven Havens is set to premiere on Paramount+ on Oct. 9. The team is developing additional projects including a new series in a different time period.
Creators considered showing Katara pregnant but dropped the idea. DiMartino said it felt too grown-up, while Konietzko noted it created an odd context for the plot.
