The British Show Pony Society (BSPS) and Marnie-Grange Stud have introduced a new series for 2026 to reward consistent rider-pony combinations through point accumulation. Sponsored by Alan Marnie, the awards will cover qualifying shows for major events like the Royal International Horse Show and London International. Top performers will receive substantial cash prizes and recognition.
The British Show Pony Society (BSPS) has partnered with Marnie-Grange Stud to launch the BSPS Marnie-Grange Stud Leading Pony of the Year awards, set to debut in 2026. This initiative, sponsored by Alan Marnie, aims to honor consistent performances by allowing rider-pony combinations to build points across designated qualifying classes at shows linked to the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS), including its final, and the London International Horse Show (LIHS). The series operates within a defined seasonal timeframe, emphasizing steady achievement over single standout results.
Participants in relevant sections will compete for prizes of £50 for first place, £30 for second, and £20 for third in each class, with rosettes awarded up to sixth. BSPS members can upload results after each show to a league table, enabling real-time tracking of standings and progress. At the season's end, the overall champion earns £1,000, followed by £750 for the reserve, £500 for third reserve, £300 for fourth, £150 for fifth, and £100 for sixth.
Adding a community element, from October to December, members will vote on their favorite leading pony among the top six in each championship. The winner of this members' award will be announced at the BSPS annual general meeting (AGM).
This sponsorship aligns with a new equestrian collaboration between Alan Marnie and experienced showman Jerome Harforth. Marnie emphasized the deeper commitment behind the support: “Supporting the sport is about more than visibility — it’s about backing the organisations and people who ensure a strong future. The BSPS plays a vital role within our industry, and Marnie-Grange reflects our belief in British breeding and the importance of investing for the long term.”
BSPS chairman Paul Cook expressed appreciation for the backing: “We are very grateful to the Marnie-Grange Stud in supporting this new initiative, with fabulous prizes. This new competition will reward the rider/pony combinations who achieve consistent results across a range of qualifying classes, culminating in fantastic championships, which will showcase the best ponies in each section.”
The awards underscore a focus on sustainability and excellence in British pony showing, potentially boosting participation in the sport's competitive circuit.
