Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, featuring Cillian Murphy returning as gangster Thomas Shelby. Set in 1940 Birmingham during World War II, the story follows Shelby confronting his illegitimate son Duke, played by Barry Keoghan, who leads the gang and faces potential treason with Nazi sympathizers. The film premieres in select theaters on March 6 and streams on Netflix starting March 20.
The trailer for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, released on February 19, picks up after the original BBC series concluded its sixth season in 2022. Cillian Murphy reprises his role as Thomas Shelby, who emerges from a seven-year self-imposed exile to address changes in the Peaky Blinders gang. Sophie Rundle returns as Ada Shelby, informing her brother that his illegitimate son Duke, portrayed by Barry Keoghan, is running the operation "like it's 1919 all over again."
Shelby expresses reluctance, stating in the trailer, "I can't help him because I'm not that man anymore." However, Duke's entanglement with British Fascist sympathizer Beckett, played by Tim Roth, draws Shelby back into action. Beckett asks Duke, "I need to know that you are willing to take part in an act of treason that will decide this war for Germany." Duke responds indifferently, saying, "The world doesn't give a f--k about me and I don't give a f--k about the world."
The film, set amid World War II chaos in Birmingham, explores Shelby's confrontation with his past. Rebecca Ferguson's character warns him of a "house haunted with ghosts of people who died because of you" and notes that he abandoned his kingdom and son. Stephen Graham reprises Hayden Stagg, to whom Shelby declares, "It is now," signaling his involvement.
A tense meeting at the Garrison Tavern between Shelby and Duke ends with Shelby reflecting, "Once, I nearly got f--king everything. But nearly doesn't count." Directed by Tom Harper and written by Steven Knight, the cast includes Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, and Jay Lycurgo.
The soundtrack features a new song, "Puppet," by Grian Chatten of Fontaines DC, with lyrics including "How does it feel to be a savage and a beast?" Additional music comes from Amy Taylor of Amyl & the Sniffers, Nick Cave, Lankum, McLusky, and covers by Girl In The Year Above and Chatten of Massive Attack tracks, alongside a new version of the series theme "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
Murphy described Shelby's state in a Netflix Tudum interview: "He's as broken as he has been... in this liminal space, not really living, he's not really dead." A sequel TV series is planned post-film, focusing on the Shelby family after World War II.
