DCI arrests two suspects with fake KSh6 million

Kenyan police have arrested two suspects found transporting counterfeit notes worth KSh6 million along the Thika-Garissa Highway. The seizure occurred during a routine check at a roadblock in Kanyonyoo.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations stopped a black Toyota Vitz at the Kanyonyoo roadblock on 3 July 2026. A search uncovered four bundles of fake KSh1,000 notes hidden in a white carrier bag. The notes had a combined face value of KSh6 million and were wrapped in khaki paper, aluminium foil and tape.

The suspects were reportedly taking the currency to Wamunyu in Kitui County for further processing before circulation. They were arrested and booked at Kanyonyoo Police Station along with the recovered notes.

The DCI stated that counterfeit currency remains a serious threat to the economy and public trust in financial transactions. Investigations continue to identify any wider network involved.
