Egypt’s electricity minister meets UK ambassador on renewable energy cooperation

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, met with the United Kingdom’s new Ambassador to Cairo, Mark Bryson-Richardson, at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to explore opportunities for deeper cooperation and investment in the renewable energy sector. The meeting aligns with Egypt’s national strategy to scale up renewable energy within its power mix.

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, held discussions with UK Ambassador Mark Bryson-Richardson to strengthen partnerships in clean energy. Esmat emphasized the government’s commitment to opening new opportunities for British companies in solar and wind projects, as well as grid enhancement and localization of key electrical components for renewable systems. He outlined Egypt’s targets to increase the renewable energy share in its electricity mix to over 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040, aligning with sustainable development and decarbonization goals.

The minister highlighted the importance of modern technologies, knowledge sharing, and specialized training, noting the private sector’s vital role in expanding the renewable portfolio. He stressed the electricity sector’s centrality to industrial, agricultural, and urban development, leveraging Egypt’s abundant solar and wind resources. Efforts include creating an attractive investment climate, attracting foreign capital, and collaborating with international financial institutions on major projects.

The ambassador commended the expertise in Egypt’s electricity sector and expressed the UK’s enthusiasm for broader cooperation across the power industry. He pledged to encourage more British investors to tap into Egypt’s growing renewable market. Both sides agreed to sustain close coordination on existing projects and expand joint efforts toward cleaner energy, reduced emissions, and sustainable economic growth.
