Ethiopian electric power inks cooperation pact with Chinese grid firm

In Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Electric Power has signed a cooperation agreement with China's Power Grid Company for energy service delivery. The pact covers power generation and distribution systems, smart grid operations, and AI-driven predictive maintenance. It also aims to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure and enhance customer services.

On December 16, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Electric Power signed a cooperation agreement with China's Power Grid Company to work together on energy service delivery. The meeting involved the agency's chief executive officer, Getu Girmew, and senior officials from the Chinese company.

The two organizations agreed to collaborate on power generation and distribution systems, smart grid operations, and predictive maintenance powered by artificial intelligence. They also committed to expanding the electric vehicle charging project base and improving customer service delivery. Ato Anwar Abare, the agency's chief communications officer, told Fana Digital that this agreement will help introduce innovative and technology-enabled systems to manage and ensure the reliability of Ethiopia's power supply.

Both sides expressed their readiness to enhance Ethiopia's energy infrastructure through this partnership. This collaboration could modernize Ethiopia's electric power system with advanced technologies.
