Aldon Smith, the ex-San Francisco 49ers defensive standout, was found unresponsive in a pickup truck and pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose. He was 36 years old. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the cause.
Smith spent the day before his death helping deliver pizzas to a homeless outreach group in the Bay Area with friend Amir Shirazi. After running errands, Shirazi found him slumped in the passenger seat of a truck outside his Los Gatos home.
Shirazi called 911 and performed CPR with former NFL player Anthony Dixon until responders arrived. Smith was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead. No official cause has been released.
A video from the day prior shows Smith telling a barber he had "had better days" while struggling with ongoing issues. The San Francisco 49ers released a statement expressing devastation over the loss of their 2011 first-round pick.
