Google has invested $1 million in Animaj, an AI-focused animation studio targeting younger audiences. This marks the first direct funding from YouTube to a kids' studio. The company is also providing Animaj access to its DeepMind program and Veo video generator.
Google's investment comes amid ongoing challenges with AI-generated content on YouTube, particularly for children. According to Bloomberg, the $1 million funding supports Animaj, described as an AI animation studio for younger viewers. This is the first instance of YouTube directly funding such a kids' studio, with additional integration into Google's DeepMind program and early access to Veo, its video generation tool. Animaj co-founder Sixte de Vauplane stated, “Google knows the problem and the issue of AI slop.” He added, “They know that right now, you don’t have a lot of people and a lot of players in the kids media industry that have really proven their ability to use AI in a very good way.” YouTube has historically served as an automated entertainment source for many households, but it faced issues with surreal and predatory kids' content in the past. The platform settled a $170 million FTC lawsuit over child privacy concerns. While channels like CoComelon, Blippi, and Ms. Rachel now provide more standard content, AI-generated videos continue to proliferate across major platforms, including YouTube. Google aims to embrace AI material broadly, but YouTube must manage uses involving intellectual properties and potential misinformation.
