Grigor Dimitrov displayed notable sportsmanship during his first-round victory at the Nordea Open. The Bulgarian overruled an umpire's decision in a tiebreaker against Dalibor Svrcina. He went on to win the match in three sets.
The incident occurred in the first-set tiebreaker. Dimitrov held a 2-0 lead when he reached for a shot that appeared to win the point. The chair umpire awarded it to him, but Dimitrov asked for a replay because he was unsure whether the ball had bounced twice.
Dimitrov won the replayed point and took the tiebreaker 7-5. He had earlier recovered from a 4-1 deficit in the set. The Bulgarian then secured the match victory.
Dimitrov has a history of such gestures. He received the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award in 2024 from his peers. He will next face Nuno Borges in the second round.
