IEBC publishes lists for uncontested by-election seats

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has released gazette notices outlining candidates, polling stations, and tallying centers for by-elections on November 27, 2025. In Mitkei and Tembelio wards, candidates will take office unopposed, eliminating the need for polls in those areas. The commission emphasized transparency and adherence to the Electoral Code of Conduct to ensure peaceful campaigns.

Preparations for Kenya's upcoming by-elections intensified as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) published key details on October 31, 2025. The gazette notices include lists of nominated candidates, designated polling stations, and tallying centers, while declaring no contests in Mitkei and Tembelio wards due to a lack of opponents.

In these wards, the candidates—both from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA)—will automatically assume their positions as Members of the County Assembly without a vote. IEBC stated that this approach aligns with its mandate to promote transparency and prevent unnecessary elections where competition is absent.

"The Commission has officially published the requisite Gazette Notices in preparation for the upcoming By-Elections scheduled for November 27, 2025," IEBC announced. "These notices provide crucial details on: The list of Nominated Candidates, the Declaration of No Contest for Mitkei and Tembelio Wards, the designated Polling Stations and the specific Tallying Centres."

The commission also urged all candidates and political parties to strictly follow the Electoral Code of Conduct, stressing the need for peaceful and transparent campaigns.

This publication follows a warning issued by IEBC on October 24, 2025, regarding a fake gazette notice circulating on social media. The false document claimed that IEBC had prematurely declared UDA candidates for Tembelio and Metkei wards as winners. IEBC clarified that no such official notice had been issued, aiming to curb misinformation ahead of the polls.
