An Indian seafarer was killed and several others injured when Iranian missiles struck two UAE oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz on July 14, 2026. India summoned Iran's deputy chief of mission to protest the attack.
The attack targeted the UAE-flagged tankers MT Mombasa and MT Al Bahiyah while they were in the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz within Omani territorial waters. Of the 46 crew members aboard the two vessels, 30 were Indian nationals. One Indian died and another was injured on MT Al Bahiyah. Nine Indians were injured on MT Mombasa, including two reported to be seriously injured.
The Ministry of External Affairs summoned the deputy chief of mission of the Iranian embassy in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest. India condemned the attacks on commercial shipping and called for an immediate end to violence targeting seafarers along with restoration of free navigation through international waterways.
The government announced measures including a dedicated liaison officer for each affected family and an operational dashboard to track every Indian seafarer on vessels in the region regardless of flag.
