Jara criticizes Meza's pardon remarks and warns of social setback

Presidential candidate Jeannette Jara strongly condemned deputy José Carlos Meza's statements on commuting sentences for those convicted of sexual abuse against minors. She accused it of paving the way for pardoning Miguel Krassnoff and representing a setback for Chilean society. She urged parents to remain vigilant against such proposals.

During a campaign event in Iquique, Jeannette Jara, the officialism's presidential candidate from the Communist Party, reiterated her harsh criticism of statements by deputy José Carlos Meza from Republicanos. Meza had suggested this week that sentence commutations for terminally ill patients should extend to those convicted of sexual abuse against minors.

Jara described these remarks as 'gravísimos' and linked them to an effort to justify a potential pardon for Miguel Krassnoff, a former DINA agent convicted of human rights violations. 'They have advanced so much in their discourse trying to justify why they will pardon him that now they are willing for people who raped minors, pedophiles, to leave prison, and that is unacceptable, it has no justification, even if they are 70 or 80 years old', Jara stated.

The candidate argued that suggesting this possibility inflicts 'damage to children, violence, and revictimization', and called it 'a setback for Chilean society'. 'I call on parents to be alert to these signals, because if they are not yet in government and are proposing things like this, which are completely absurd, it is very concerning what could happen if they win', she concluded.

Additionally, Jara questioned José Antonio Kast's migration proposals, highlighting inconsistencies such as expelling 300,000 migrants or making them pay for their own passage. On the 40-hour workweek, she defended the policy as a 'civilizational advance' that allows more family time, criticizing Republicanos for seeking to reverse it. 'Some don't value it, perhaps they haven't experienced it, but those of us who have children in our care know how important it is', she added.
