LDP-led coalition regains Lower House majority with independents' support

Japan's Liberal Democratic Party-led ruling coalition has regained its majority in the Lower House with backing from three independent lawmakers. This enables Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to pass key budget bills without opposition support.

On Friday, November 28, 2025, the Liberal Democratic Party-led ruling coalition regained its majority in Japan's Lower House after three independent lawmakers agreed to join the LDP's in-house group. These lawmakers previously belonged to the same parliamentary group.

After meeting with LDP Secretary-General Shunichi Suzuki, they informed him of their decision to accept the LDP's invitation. Lower House lawmaker Takeshi Saiki told reporters, “The three of us agreed that it is essential for us to join forces to support the approval of the budget proposals and the bills which will soon be on the table in parliament.”

With this support, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's administration can now pass key budget bills without needing opposition backing. Relevant keywords include LDP, Nippon Ishin no Kai, Sanae Takaichi, and Diet.
