Wizards of the Coast is preparing a Star Trek expansion for Magic: The Gathering under the Universes Beyond line. The set draws from six decades of the sci-fi franchise and introduces new mechanics tailored to its character-driven stories.
The expansion is scheduled for release on November 13. Designers revealed the first cards on July 14 and discussed their approach during MagicCon: Amsterdam.
Principal game designer Gavin Verhey and senior editor Matt Tabak explained the focus on moral dilemmas and engine-building strategies rather than direct combat. A new Dilemma mechanic rewards choices on modal spells, while Spacecraft cards align with rules introduced in the 2025 Edge of Eternities set.
Tabak drew on his prior work at the Star Trek: The Experience attraction in Las Vegas to ensure authentic references. The team avoided overly obscure nods but aimed to include Easter eggs for fans of both properties.
Verhey noted that Klingon strategies will still emphasize aggressive play while other elements highlight the franchise’s emphasis on dialogue and decisions.
