A 60-year-old man was fatally beaten outside a Las Vegas food bank after intervening to protect his girlfriend from two men who demanded a cigarette from her.
Scott Dennis stepped in when Shiloh Leutu, 38, and another man began insulting his girlfriend after she said she did not smoke. Police said the men attacked Dennis, knocking him to the ground and continuing to hit and kick him until witnesses intervened.
Leutu was arrested on July 15 and charged with battery of an older person resulting in substantial bodily harm. Prosecutors declined to pursue an open murder charge pending the autopsy report, which is incomplete.
Surveillance video contradicted Leutu's claim that Dennis had struck first. The second suspect remains at large. Leutu was scheduled to appear in Clark County court on Monday.
