Marlins to resume extension talks with Eury Pérez this offseason

The Miami Marlins are set to re-engage in contract extension discussions with young right-hander Eury Pérez this winter, following unsuccessful talks during spring training. Pérez, who turns 23 next April, impressed in his return from Tommy John surgery with strong 2025 performances. The team also eyes extending outfielder Kyle Stowers amid a promising contention window.

The Miami Marlins showed interest in securing Eury Pérez's future during spring training 2025, while the pitcher rehabbed from Tommy John surgery, but the two sides did not reach an agreement before the season started. According to a report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and a source via MLB.com, the Marlins plan to resume talks with Pérez's representatives this offseason.

Pérez, who shares the same agent as Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara—signed to a five-year, $56 million extension in December 2021—will first become arbitration-eligible after the 2026 season. He cannot hit free agency until after the 2029 campaign, at age 26. Signed as an international free agent from the Dominican Republic for $200,000 on July 2, 2019, the 6-foot-8, 220-pound Pérez fast-tracked to the majors, debuting on May 12, 2023, as the youngest pitcher in franchise history at 20 years and 27 days, surpassing José Fernández.

In his 2023 rookie season, Pérez made 19 starts with a 3.15 ERA, 149 ERA+, and 10.6 K/9 over 91 1/3 innings, finishing seventh in NL Rookie of the Year voting and helping the Marlins reach the playoffs despite missing the Wild Card Series due to injury. Returning in 2025, he posted a 4.25 ERA, 104 ERA+, 9.9 K/9, and 1.049 WHIP across 20 starts and 95 1/3 innings. He ended strong with 33 strikeouts, four walks, and one homer allowed in his final 20 innings. Baseball Savant metrics ranked him in the 94th percentile for fastball velocity at 97.9 mph, 89th for xBA at .204, 85th for fastball run value, and 83rd for xERA at 3.21.

Career-wise over 39 big-league starts, Pérez holds a 3.71 ERA (123 ERA+), 3.38 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and 3.9 Wins Above Replacement per Baseball Reference. The Marlins, who improved by 17 wins in 2025 and stayed in postseason contention until late, aim to build on this with free agency additions. Their entire 40-man roster remains under control for at least two more seasons, signaling commitment to core players like Pérez and breakout All-Star Kyle Stowers, with whom extension talks are also in discussion.

Such pre-arbitration extensions for pitchers under 23 are rare, with historical examples including Julio Teheran's six-year, $32.4 million deal with the Braves in 2014.
