Maud Bregeon, the 34-year-old deputy from Hauts-de-Seine, returns to her role as spokesperson for the Lecornu II government after a short break. Once a fierce critic of the pension reform suspension, she now backs the government's line while advocating for debate moderation. Her return, unsurprising, mirrors France's recent political instability.
In just one year, France has seen a whirlwind of four governments, underscoring significant political instability. Appointed spokesperson in September 2024, three months before Michel Barnier's censure, Maud Bregeon left her post feeling her mission was unfinished. At 34, this Hauts-de-Seine deputy and Macronist figure now resumes her duties in the Lecornu II government.
Aware of the precarious situation, she has only reinstalled the coffee machine she brought during her first stint. Met on October 24 at the Hôtel de Rothelin-Charolais in Paris's 7th arrondissement, she remarks: « One should never feel at home in a ministry, especially in a political moment like this ».
Her return to the spokesperson role surprised few within Renaissance. Since the end of summer, many had already seen her campaigning for it. « If we refuse difficulty in a moment like this, we might as well stop politics », she retorts. « It means taking positions we wouldn't have necessarily supported six months ago, because the context demands it. »
Long seen as a « boxer » in the media for Macronists, Bregeon was highly critical at the announcement of the pension reform suspension. Just days before this decision, she was among the most vehement opponents in her camp. Though she remains hostile to the measure, she now defends its principle, converting to the pursuit of compromise and the calming of public debate.
