Focus Features and Blumhouse’s Obsession has surpassed The Blair Witch Project to claim the highest gross for a film acquired at a festival. The horror romance reached $286.5 million worldwide as of the latest weekend.
The film, directed by Curry Barker and starring Indie Navarrette, Michael Johnston and Cooper Tomlinson, was acquired by Focus Features for more than $15 million out of TIFF Midnight after a $750,000 production budget. Its domestic total stands at $188.3 million after a $19 million weekend that marked the fourth straight frame above its opening.
Internationally the picture added $15.1 million for a $98.1 million foreign cume. Strong holds continued in the UK and Ireland, India, the Middle East, Mexico, the Philippines, Israel and the Netherlands, where it ranks among the top horror releases in each market.
Obsession now exceeds the lifetime totals of Get Out, The Sixth Sense and several other horror titles, while remaining behind only Star Wars: Mandalorian and Grogu globally.
